We tell a story about violence to make sense of it, and the story returns us to the public realm where grieving is possible. Human beings cannot remain in this silence and survive, and so we have to learn to say what is unsayable. Hannah Arendt calls this the private realm, the dark shadowy place that violence throws us into, shocked and speechless and alone in our loss. The hole swallows up language, memory, and meaning and leaves us in a scarred and stripped landscape. Violence makes a hole-not just the damage it inflicts on the body of a person but the pain it causes in the body of a people. I love that the book is inviting people to go on that journey with me.”īelow, an excerpt from Valarie Kaur’s See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love. If you want to understand the 9/11 on people of color, you have to be able to walk in their shoes. That kind of depth you can access with the written word, you can’t get though any other medium. Twenty years later, there’s a chance to go deeper and to invite people not just to know what happened but to know what it felt like. “That did do its work, we crisscrossed the country showing that film, so people were introduced to the experiences of people of color after 9/11 that they were blind to before. “What I first created after that trip across the country was a film, because I needed people to see our faces and hear our voices and come to understand the struggle of the Sikh community through stories on screen,” she says.

I recommend it to everyone! A high quality German/Austrian “young modern scenes” movie…wonderful and just as good as any American film. The homosexual setting was like every heterosexual setting in any other movie. The fact that it was a homosexual love story was, in my opinion, not the main setting of the movie. The scenes from the childhood in a very nostalgic way. The movie gives you a feel good vibe…lot of great pictures. hat einen weiteren 'Antihelden' in die Mitte einer Geschichte gestellt. I loved the cut-scenes, which came up to show the emotions of Phil – and the music was also carefully chosen (Down by the River by Milky Chance). The main characters (Phi, Glass and Nicholas) were played very well. Die Mitte der Welt audiobook (Abridged) By Andreas Steinhöfel. The characters in the movie were lovely and you could empathize with them in many ways. I saw this movie before i read the book and i have to say it was really really good.Īt first i was a little bit annoyed about the half English – half German speaking mother, but when it came up she had an American heritage it wasn’t so bad after all. 1h 55min | Drama | 10 November 2016 (Germany)Īfter a summer spent with his his best friend Kat to escape his family, Phil goes back to school and starts to question his feelings towards Nicholas, a new classmate. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Fudge-a-Mania by Judy BlumeI gotta say this isn't as good as Judy Blue's other book Are You There God, It's Me, Hegel. What might happen?! Then Fudgo and Apple Pie accidentally walk in on Sheila's grandparents "making kissy time" and the book just gets weirder from there. So anyway, Frodgo baggins and his best friend Gholem meets a baseball player named "Apple Pie" and then there is the big game. I found out about this book from an highly recommendation by Gregsamson who is also a character out of Kafka's The Transmetomographicationer. This is the 4th book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. She clearly understands the stories and the medium in which she is working and is able to convey the story to the artist. There are a couple of things that really make this graphic novel stand out, and a couple of smaller items that keep me from giving this a perfect 5 out of 5 rating.įirst, Leah Moore’s adaptation is simply brilliant. I will, however, tell you that this is one of the best, illustrated adaptations of the stories that I have ever encountered. I’m not going to summarize the story because you should already know it. earliest, must-read books for readers of the English language. If you don’t already know the basic story of Alice ‘s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, then I’m surprised you’re here reading a book review because it is one of the most basic. “It was full of petticoats with lace frills on them-frills and frills,” she whispered to her friend Jessie as she bent over her geography. Lavinia had managed to pass Sara’s room when the door was open, and had seen Mariette opening a box which had arrived late from some shop. One or two of them had even caught a glimpse of her French maid, Mariette, who had arrived the evening before. They knew very certainly that she was Miss Minchin’s show pupil and was considered a credit to the establishment. By that time every pupil- from Lavinia Herbert, who was nearly thirteen and felt quite grown up, to Lottie Legh, who was only just four and the baby of the school- had heard a great deal about her. When Sara entered the schoolroom the next morning everybody looked at her with wide, interested eyes. You should visit Browse Happy and update your internet browser today! Almost immediately, negotiations break down and old enmities erupt. Now the students have returned to Mars, accompanied by a group of prominent Earth delegates, to see if the two worlds can learn to co-exist in peace and friendship. Five years ago, with the apparent goal of reconciliation, the Martian government sent a group of students to Earth to study humanity's home planet and act as goodwill ambassadors from the Red Planet. Inhabitants of the two planets have come to view each other with suspicion and even hatred. Having declared an independent Martian Republic, the two planets evolved along separate trajectories, becoming two incompatible worlds vastly different in their scale, economy, socio-political system, and mostly importantly of all, ideals. The first novel from the Hugo Award-winning author of 'Folding Bejing', Hao Jingfang, translated by the Hugo Award-winning translator of The Three-Body Problem, Ken Liu.Ī century ago, the Martian colonies rebelled against the rule of Earth. His main concerns are protecting his siblings and avoiding the nobility at all costs. Jack Turner grew up on the streets of London now he’s something of a fix-it man, providing the sort of assistance to those in need that only someone with questionable morals can. This novel remains one of my favorites, and it’s a great introduction to Sebastian’s work. Start With Her Debut The Soldier’s Scoundrel (The Turners #1) If you’re not sure where to start with Cat Sebastian books (short answer: read them all), use this reading pathway as your guide. You’ll be rooting for her characters from page one, even when they seem intent on getting their love lives hopelessly tangled up. Queer family often plays a central role, and even the books that center men have feminist themes and secondary female characters with agency and real personality. Her work is full of rich historical detail and fantastic secondary plots-whether it’s a murder mystery, the invention of the telegraph, or Regency bookselling. Even her most angsty and serious novels manage to include plenty of warmth and delight. The thread running through them all is: funny, feminist, and queer as hell. So far, her work includes stories centering M/M, F/F, M/F, and M/Nonbinary romances. Cat Sebastian writes queer historical romance of many persuasions. If you’re a fan of queer and/or historical romance and you have yet to discover the joy of Cat Sebastian books, you are in for a rare treat. Watching it unfold in real time is highly fascinating and absorbing we’re in the middle of the most transformative era in the automobile’s history since the 1920s. We shall see…)įor those of us with an interest in automotive history, Elon Musk and Tesla is the biggest story that’s come along in a very long time. There’s still a lot of unfinished business for Musk. I’m not very interested in spending time on them, but would rather focus on the results. That alone continues to keep Tesla well ahead of the “Tesla Killers”.Īs to Musk’s personality issues and its manifestations, let’s just say that success has amplified them, as it almost invariably does. In Q3, Tesla had a profit of $9,500 per car sold, a truly stellar performance given that no mass-producer of EVs is yet making a profit on them. Tesla continues to reduce production costs, and its top-selling Model Y has had some radical under-the-skin changes (Megacastings, structural battery pack, etc.) that have driven down its cost to build and thus creates very large profits. Obviously, both companies have prospered since then, especially so Tesla, whose growth is still on a tear as well as its profits. It is a decent short take on a Musk history, especially as applies to Space X and Tesla. But in rereading it and the comments, I changed my mind. At first thought, I wasn’t going to rerun this. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Love and war john jakesThe three miniseries, containing 90-minute episodes produced by David L.
